“Sesame Street” trash cans, the Ninja Turtles’ lair and Miss Piggy’s exquisite wardrobe will have a new home in Astoria next year.
The Museum of the Moving Image announced Tuesday that the Jim Henson family will donate 400 puppets, costumes, props and other memorabilia to the Queens museum for a special gallery.
Henson’s daughter Cheryl said her father was always fond of the city, where he set up his famous workshop, and she and her siblings want to give back to it.
“Many of the Muppets we have come to love were made here in New York City,” Cheryl Henson said at a news conference where Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Miss Piggy, Oscar the Grouch and Gobo from “Fraggle Rock” were on hand.
When it opens in winter 2014, the exhibit will include:
Various puppet incarnations of the Muppets from their specials, movies and appearances.
Props from movies that Henson helped make, such as “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” and “The Dark Crystal.”
An interactive panel where kids can create their own Muppet show and post it online.
