All members of New York’s bravest who die in the line of duty will now be honored on the Fallen Firefighter Memorial in Albany

Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed a law Thursday that changes the rules for how firefighters are named on a wall at the site. Previously only firefighters who died while fighting fires were listed, but now members who lose their life during any operation will be listed.

“Every firefighter who has paid the ultimate sacrifice while protecting their community deserves to be recognized for their courage and heroic service,” Cuomo said in a statement.

The governor said the need for a change came in light of the 2006 death of Paul Brady. The 42-year-old, who was killed when he accidentally fell off a fire engine while it was on route to a fire, was not memorialized at the wall.

“Paul Brady was a hero and I thank Gov. Cuomo for signing this important bill,” Senate Majority Leader Dean Skellos said in a statement.

There are more than 2,300 names engraved at the memorial. The earliest death dates back to 1811.
