Cops will be monitoring gas stations throughout the city while motorists wait in long lines try and get the remaining fuel.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said oil tankers have unloaded 21 million gallons of gasoline so far and more is on the way. He couldn’t give a definite timetable of when it will come to gas stations but he urged drivers to be patient.

“It will take a little while to get the distribution to stations. Until the bottleneck clears, lines at the pump probably will remain long,” he said.

Police officers are posted at every open gas station in the city, according to the mayor.

There already have been several arrests involving gas customers who have gotten into fights and recently motorists have been hoarding gas from nearby parked vehicles, according to Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

“That’s human nature, they see the lines they’re nervous and they act,” he said.

Cuomo said he is mulling a gas rationing plan for drivers.
